There is something exciting about the thought of a career in the medical field. And the job opportunities are growing remarkably fast. Nowhere is this truer than jobs as a registered nurse. And there are many areas of nurse specialization depending on a person’s interest. These jobs can pay very well and come with nice benefits to those with the proper certifications and training.

Not that nursing jobs are easy. In fact, they are very demanding both physically and emotionally. Working with people is always hard but especially so with those who are sick. And the daily tasks that a nurse can be called upon to do are distasteful to many to say the least. Having acknowledged that, since you are helping people, nursing can be more than a job to earn an income. A day’s work, though it may be challenging can be very satisfying.

Below is some information on various areas that RN’s perform their duties. Most nurses in the USA work in the context of a hospital. As such, they often function as assistants to doctors and surgeons in caring for patients and in the operation of medical procedures.

Head nurses may work in a more supervisory role in scheduling, coordinating, and instructing other nurses. Nurses typically work in one specialized area of the hospitals and healthcare services, though in smaller hospitals, nurses responsibilities may be more broad. Nurses frequently work long shifts and on occasion have to work overtime.

There are government employed registered nurses who work within a certain area to assist in the healthcare of the community at large. This can include healthcare checkups, vaccinations, and the providing of general health and nutrition information for both adults and children.

A nurse also has the option of working more independently in caring for patients in their homes. This care is for people who may have recently returned from the hospital and needs some ongoing nursing care, or someone who has a chronic medical condition that requires ongoing attention.

This article only scratches the surface of the many opportunities for trained registered nurses. The field is wide open and the prospect for job opportunities for years to come is very good.
